Nguyen Hoang Nha Tien, with 15 years of experience in the aviation industry, said it is absolutely forbidden to carry other people’s luggage at the airport.
“International flights are different from domestic flights, it is not simply about the plane moving through international airspace, but also about the related procedures from the moment you step into the terminal,” said Nha Tien, who lives in Ho Chi Minh City and was a former representative of Singapore Airlines in Vietnam. She also shared many experiences to have a safe international flight.

Don’t carry other people’s things
With 15 years of experience in the aviation industry, especially in the ground service department, Ms. Tien said “absolutely do not accept to hold things for others when going through the airport, even if you are close”. According to Ms. Tien, this is a detail that is “not new”, but many people still subjectively accept to hold things for others.
“There are many risky cases in the world, the item that is asked to be carried is a prohibited substance. Even if you hold it for someone, you will still get into trouble with the law”. Currently, there are many units that accept to transport multinational goods at cheap and fast prices. Therefore, when asked to hold things for others, instruct them to send it through the service.
An aviation engineer with nearly 20 years of experience in Vietnam also confirmed this. He said that in the aviation industry, there is always a “classic” question at the baggage check-in area. “Is this your suitcase? Did you pack this suitcase yourself?”. If you answer “yes”, you are fully responsible for that suitcase.
In case of carrying luggage, the airline staff will warn you about the possible risks. You will be fully responsible.

Do not bring sensitive items
You should look up on websites and contact the airline to make sure what you cannot bring. If there is still no clear information, do not bring it, especially food. Many countries have very strict penalties for visitors bringing food into the country. In Thailand, visitors who intentionally bring fresh fruits and vegetables without an import license or without declaration can face a one-year prison sentence. You should read customs regulations carefully before wanting to bring foreign currency or valuables.
“You must remember, because this is for your own safety. It is best not to violate. The reason that ignorance is not a crime is difficult to accept,” Tien said.
Read the information printed on the ticket carefully
In addition to reading the regulations, passengers need to know the type of ticket they will fly and the conditions printed on the ticket, such as whether they will be refunded if they do not fly (due to the passenger’s fault).
Do not buy tickets from strange websites or agents. When you have a ticket code (if purchased from a third party), you should call the airline to check before flying. If you encounter a scam, you can still have a backup plan.
Pay attention to the time to avoid being late for the transit
Passengers on long-haul flights often transit (connect flights). When transferring to major stations around the world, you should find the departure gates first. Determine where the boarding gate is before going sightseeing or shopping. Do not hang around without knowing the exit gate, leading to missing the flight. When buying tickets, you need to pay attention to the minimum transfer time of 2-3 hours to avoid being rushed.
Luggage should be stored before flying
When traveling long distances, you should wrap it in plastic at the airport to protect your suitcase, prevent theft, and prevent moisture (fabric suitcases). Take a photo of your luggage before putting it on the conveyor belt, to make it easier to describe if it is lost. Weigh your luggage because some airports check your luggage carefully, you may have trouble if it is overweight (leave it behind or pay extra at a high cost).
Carry-on baggage should be in compliance with regulations. If your luggage is required to be sent to the cargo hold at the departure gate or on the plane (because it contains items that are not allowed to be carried by hand), the airline will use a special tag called the “Liability Release Tag”. When luggage has an accident or is lost, the compensation for valuable items in the luggage is low.
Should buy travel insurance
Travel insurance is always mandatory when traveling to Europe. Places where it is not mandatory should still buy it. Tien said that people often think that travel insurance is only a precaution against illness or accidents while traveling. In fact, insurance will protect travelers on a large scale, not just for illness. Depending on the type of insurance, travelers may be paid if their belongings are lost or robbed while traveling.
“Medical costs in many countries around the world are expensive. If you have insurance, travelers will feel more secure,” Tien said.
